Organizing on a budget

Don’t get me wrong: I frequent The Container Store more than anybody I know. It is a beautiful oasis full of bins, baskets, and chotskies. But, they don’t always have what I need and unless you’re a POP awards member (sign-up for it!), their prices can be a bit steep. A lot of people want to get organized without spending a ton of money. So where do I like to buy affordable home organization products?  Here are a few of my favorite alternatives to The Container Store:

Savers or Goodwill: I’m a big fan of upcycling whenever you can. It’s good for the environment and a great way to save money. I get organizing items for free from Facebook groups or from places like Savers at a really low price. I can tell you from personal experience that folks drop off organizing products all of the time to Savers and Goodwill, so if you’re not opposed to using second-hand items, then this is definitely a place to visit.

World Market: When I think of organizing products, World Market isn’t the first place I think of but it’s a hidden gem. They have great decorative pieces that could be considered organization products such as baskets, canisters, shelving, and desk accessories. I went the other day and got a lid organizer on sale for only $6 which is a lot cheaper than I’ve seen in other stores. They have a rewards program, too, so you often get good deals and can earn points towards future discounts.

Homegoods & Homesense: I try to limit my visits to Homegoods because I always leave with more things than I needed. But when I do go, I always take a look in their laundry and baskets sections because they have a ton of products that are comparable to The Container Store but for a much lower price. The downside is there’s no guarantee that they’ll have the exact size or quantity you’re looking for, but I can usually find what I need.

Target: Who doesn’t love Target?!  They have everything which is both the pro and con of shopping there. I typically buy my 3M hooks, shelving, and plastic bins from Target and I can grab great decor items while I'm in the store. I’m a fan of Studio McGee’s line for living room, kitchen, and dining room items. The Pillowfort line for kid’s playrooms and bedrooms is fabulous, especially their cute baskets and shelving units.

As a professional organizer who is certified both with the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals (NAPO) and as a Certified Interior Decorator (CID), I recommend solutions that work for my clients’ budget, aesthetic, and lifestyle. No matter the size of your budget, I’m here to help you feel happy and relaxed at home - because that is priceless.
